And lots of crappy webcam photos.

Okay, so I don't have a camera and that causes some problems. Mainly that I can't sell crochet with crappy looking webcam photos, which is annoying as hell really. I have some pictures of popple that are good quality because I took them when I was at home and able to steal my mum's camera, but now I'm back at uni and camera free.
I wanted to tell the story of my crochet development, and to do that you will have top ut up with all my fuzzy fuzzy photos. Kay?
So, it started with this thing called Mission 101. Just before the new year everybody was talking about new year's resolutionsand the idea of mission 101 was suggested to me, which is where you write a list of 101 things you want to achieve within 1001 days. Check it out here. I'd seen some adorable looking amigurumi and wanted to attempt it myself, so I stuck it on my list. And so, I started crocheting in late December, with the purchase of a 'learn to crochet' magazine from Smiths. It came with two 25g balls of acrylic yarn and a free 4.00mm hook which, although its annoying and squeaky, is my first ever hook so I love it very much.
Since then, I've bought a gorgeous purpley 4.0 hook, because I love that size and I love purple.
I found out pretty quickly that with the huge interest in crochet and amigurumi on the internet, I didn't need that magazine at all. There are SO many tutorials on youtube, and watching people is a lot easier to follow than written instructions.
I'm left handed, which I thought would make it harder to find tutorials, but it really isn't. I swear if you look hard enough you'll find tutorials for crocheting with your feet...
Its amazing how quickly you can grasp the basics, it took me a few days of angry yarn stabbing to work out how to keep the yarn under the hooky bit but seriously, it works out so easily after that.
I learnt how to make a basic square first, then moved onto circular crochet with the help of a set of tutorials I still refer to today. You can find them here, and if you're interested in learning you really should check it out. There's also some great amigurumi tips here.
I found out that 4.0mm hooks need Double Knit wool, and I found a great wool shop in the market and bought 100g balls of wool in red and white (Bonus DK), and made sure that they were made of acrylic for the bonus of vegankind =]
The first thing I made was a mario mushroom, which I really wasn't very good at but I was still proud. Oh and also, I didn't have any stuffing so I stuffed it with torn up strips of a tshirt I got free at fresher's week. I wouldn't recommend this as a stuffing, its weird.
I used this pattern, which is a good pattern but I really wasn't very good.
I bought so many balls of yarn after that, and a lot of safety eyes. I want to show pictures of all the things I made, but my pictures aren't working. So I'm gonna save this now and edit pictures into it later. I suck at blogging. =/

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://yarnandtofu.blogspot.com/2010/05/story-of-my-crochet-so-far-and-lots-of.html' title='The story of my crochet so far. I'm Phoebe and I just got a blog so that I can show the world my crochet. I'm an 18 year old vegan sociology student (who reads the Guardian, gogo hippy ranger), and I come from South England. I used to blog A LOT on Myspace, and I had a lot of readers a day, but all I ever talked about was things that stirred up a lot of drama amongst my friends, which I think is why people read it.
Something WEIRD just happened, I was writing this and the blogger thing completely changed. I'm not very good at blogging, I'm very bad at remembering to put capital letters in things and I spell things wrong and don't correct myself. Yeah. I'm going to make a big post about my crochet journey so far, and maybe some songs and films I like. I'm afraid I won't be very good about keeping to one topic, hence why I called this blog yarn and tofu, but by all means stick me in your RSS feeds. =]
I also love smiley faces.
Phoebe
